Platoon
DOSAction
Platoon is a 1987 DOS action game from Ocean Software, based on Oliver Stone’s film about an American infantry platoon during the Vietnam War. It combines side-scrolling combat with exploration and maze-like sections rather than presenting a conventional military simulation. The player controls a soldier moving through hostile jungle, villages, tunnels, and other dangerous environments while trying to survive enemy attacks and reach the end of each stage. The game emphasizes cautious movement, shooting, jumping, and learning the layout of each area. Its film license gave it strong name recognition, although contemporary opinions were mixed because of uneven difficulty, limited controls, and abrupt changes between sections. Today, Platoon is mainly of interest as an example of an 8-bit-era movie adaptation released for home computers, including DOS.
How is this list kept current?
How rankings are calculated
The list is generated from active EmuGamers catalog entries. Votes and play activity determine order; browser compatibility is reported separately and does not turn an untested game into a higher-ranked recommendation.
| Order | Signal | How it is used |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Real community votes | Games with at least one recorded vote appear before games with no votes. |
| 2 | Rating confidence | More votes rank first, followed by the rating value. |
| 3 | Play activity | Play count breaks rating ties and orders entries with no votes. |
| 4 | Stable tie-break | Game name keeps otherwise equal results deterministic. |
