How it plays

How does Adventure Game Toolkit play?

Adventure Game Toolkit is primarily a text-based creation and play environment viewed through written room descriptions and command responses. Players explore locations, examine their surroundings, collect or use objects, talk to characters, and solve puzzles by entering natural-language commands.

An individual adventure is organized around rooms, objects, creatures, messages, and conditional events. Progress depends on discovering the intended vocabulary and satisfying the author’s puzzle conditions. The toolkit itself has no single campaign, character progression system, or universal level structure; those elements are defined separately by each AGT adventure.

What is the best way to play Adventure Game Toolkit?

When playing an AGT adventure, read every description carefully and try examining, taking, opening, pushing, and using important objects. Keep notes about room exits, unusual wording, locked locations, and actions that change the state of the world.

Parser-based puzzles often depend on the author’s chosen vocabulary. If a sensible command fails, try a shorter synonym or a different verb, and save before experimenting with irreversible actions. For authors, test every puzzle path and provide alternate responses for common synonyms.
