The Ranger
The player-controlled soldier, an unnamed U.S. Army Ranger sent on solo missions behind enemy lines.
How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective during ground operations. The player guides a Ranger through enemy territory, manages movement and equipment, avoids or confronts guards, and completes the assigned objective before reaching extraction.
Missions vary in layout and purpose, including sabotage, rescue, reconnaissance, and attacks on important targets. The player chooses from available operations, parachutes into the area, searches buildings and terrain, uses weapons or explosives, and tries to conserve supplies while surviving the return journey.
Plan your run
Study the mission objective before moving and avoid unnecessary firefights. Ammunition and explosives are limited, so stealth and careful positioning are often safer than attacking every enemy.
Use the map and terrain to plan a route toward the target and an escape route back to extraction. Search the area methodically, complete the objective, and leave promptly rather than exploring after the mission is accomplished.

Airborne Ranger is a 1988 DOS action and tactical strategy game developed and published by MicroProse. It places the player in the role of a U.S. Army Ranger conducting dangerous missions behind enemy lines. Rather than focusing only on shooting, the game emphasizes planning, infiltration, reconnaissance, demolition, and survival. Missions begin with an airborne insertion and can require the player to cross hostile territory, destroy objectives, rescue personnel, or escape to a pickup point. Its combination of top-down movement, real-time combat, limited equipment, and mission selection gave it a distinctive tactical character for its era. Contemporary players generally noted its ambitious military presentation and demanding gameplay, although the controls and unforgiving encounters could make it difficult for newcomers.
