P.J. Barrett
The playable protagonist, an ordinary man stranded on an alien world who searches for a route home.
How it plays
The player views static or lightly animated illustrated scenes from a third-person perspective and directs P.J. through connected locations. The main objective is to investigate the alien environment, collect useful objects, speak with inhabitants, and solve puzzles that open new routes or advance the story.
Progression is largely non-linear within each section, with success depending on trying inventory items in the right places and selecting suitable interactions. The DOS release is a single-player adventure with no combat-focused mode or separate competitive mode.
Plan your run
Examine each new location carefully and revisit earlier areas after obtaining an unfamiliar item. Adventure-game progress often depends on combining objects with environmental details rather than using them immediately.
Keep notes about characters, places, and unsolved obstacles. If an action produces no result, try a different inventory object or return after a story event instead of repeatedly forcing the same interaction.

Altered Destiny is a science-fiction graphic adventure developed and published by Accolade for DOS in 1991. The game follows P.J. Barrett, an ordinary man who is transported to an unfamiliar alien world and must find a way back home. Exploration, conversation, inventory use, and environmental problem-solving form the core of play rather than combat or reflex challenges. The game uses illustrated scenes and a mouse-oriented interface to present a surreal journey through strange locations and encounters. Its humor, unusual setting, and puzzle-driven structure give it a distinctive identity among early-1990s computer adventures. Reception was mixed: some players appreciated its imaginative world and visual presentation, while others found the puzzles and interaction design uneven.
