How it plays

How does Archipelagos play?

The game uses a first-person perspective and divides its world into many separate archipelagos. Each island contains obelisks, trees, generators, and other objects that must be investigated and manipulated to complete the area.

The main objective is to destroy the required obelisks and reach the exit or completion condition without succumbing to radiation. Movement is deliberate, and progress depends on recognizing relationships between objects, finding safe routes, and learning how each island's hazards work. The game is primarily a solo exploration challenge rather than a combat-focused action game.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Archipelagos?

Study the island before acting, because radiation and environmental hazards can make careless movement costly.

  • Map landmarks and obelisk locations as you explore.
  • Look for patterns between trees, generators, obelisks, and safe areas.
  • Avoid wasting time in hazardous zones; return to known safe routes when possible.
  • Treat each island as a puzzle and experiment methodically rather than rushing.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use landmarks to build a mental map of each island.

  2. 2

Investigate the relationship between obelisks and nearby environmental objects before committing to a route.

  3. 3

If an area becomes dangerous, retreat and approach the puzzle from another direction.
