Sarge
The Green Army soldier controlled by the player and the central protagonist of the campaign.
How it plays
The player views the battlefield from above and guides Sarge through mission areas. Objectives involve advancing through enemy-held environments, defeating Tan soldiers and equipment, and reaching required locations or completing mission tasks.
Sarge moves around obstacles, fires equipped weapons, collects items, and changes equipment as the campaign progresses. Levels emphasize combat and navigation rather than platforming, with enemy encounters and environmental hazards providing the main challenge.
Plan your run
Keep moving while engaging enemies, since standing in the open makes Sarge an easy target. Clear nearby threats before advancing into unfamiliar areas.
Conserve stronger weapons for tougher enemies and use the environment for cover whenever possible. Explore mission areas carefully for useful items and alternate routes.

Army Men Advance is a 2001 Game Boy Advance action game developed by DC Studios and published by The 3DO Company. It places the player in command of Sarge, a Green Army soldier fighting Tan forces across oversized household and outdoor environments. The game uses a top-down perspective and combines run-and-gun shooting with mission-based exploration, weapon collection, and combat against toy-soldier enemies. Its campaign is divided into missions rather than a single continuous stage. Reception was mixed: reviewers generally recognized the attempt to bring the Army Men concept to Nintendo’s handheld, but criticized uneven controls, repetitive combat, and technical limitations. It is chiefly of historical interest as a portable Army Men adaptation.
