Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game uses a top-down chessboard perspective. Players alternate turns, selecting a piece and a legal destination according to standard chess movement and capture rules. The objective is to checkmate the opposing king; stalemate and other normal chess outcomes also apply.
Play generally consists of a human-versus-computer match or a two-player match. Captures trigger animated encounters between the involved pieces. Progression is based on improving play and overcoming stronger computer difficulty levels rather than unlocking a campaign.
Plan your run
Protect the king and develop pieces before launching attacks. Control the center with pawns and minor pieces, castle when practical, and avoid moving the same piece repeatedly during the opening.
Use the animations as presentation rather than analysis. After every computer move, check threats to your king, loose pieces, pins, and possible captures before choosing a response. On lower difficulty levels, prioritize material and simple tactics; on higher levels, calculate forcing moves several turns ahead.
Before you begin
Learn the legal movement and capture rules before relying on the animations.
Pause to evaluate the board after every capture.
Use a lower computer difficulty to practice openings and basic tactics.
Battle Chess is a fantasy-themed chess game developed and published by Interplay Productions for DOS. It uses the standard rules of chess but replaces ordinary captures with animated combat scenes, giving each piece a distinct visual personality. The core premise remains a traditional one: checkmate the opposing king through planning, calculation, and positional play. Players can compete against the computer or another person, with the computer offering multiple levels of challenge. Its unusual presentation made it memorable among late-1980s computer chess games, although its spectacle can make matches slower than a conventional chess program. The game is best suited to players who want recognizable chess fundamentals presented with arcade-like animation.
