Owyn
A young magician whose journey and growing confidence make him one of the central viewpoint characters.
How it plays
The party explores roads, wilderness, towns, ruins, and fortifications from a first-person viewpoint. Objectives are driven by the current chapter and may involve escorting characters, investigating threats, recovering objects, solving environmental puzzles, or reaching a destination before events change.
Combat switches to a tactical turn-based screen. Characters spend action points to move, attack, defend, use items, or cast spells. Weapons, armor, fatigue, wounds, skills, and consumables affect survival. Party members gain experience and improve through equipment and skill development, while chapter progression controls the larger story and available locations.
Plan your run
Manage fatigue and supplies before long journeys. Rest when necessary, keep healing items available, and avoid entering battles with wounded or exhausted characters. Save before conversations, major trips, and unfamiliar ruins because some chapters contain irreversible developments.
Use terrain and distance to control combat. Ranged attacks and spells are valuable before enemies close in, while defensive positioning can prevent weaker characters from being surrounded. Check shops and containers regularly, compare equipment carefully, and develop complementary skills rather than concentrating every improvement on one character.

Betrayal at Krondor is a story-driven fantasy role-playing game developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra On-Line for DOS. Set in Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar world, it follows a group of adventurers defending the Kingdom of the Isles against political intrigue, invasion, and supernatural threats. Exploration takes place from a first-person perspective across a large outdoor map, while battles use a separate turn-based tactical view. The game combines party management, equipment, dialogue, puzzles, and chapter-based travel with a strongly novelistic presentation. Its branching conversations and unusually detailed setting gave it a distinctive identity among early-1990s computer RPGs. Contemporary and later reception has generally praised its writing, atmosphere, and world-building, although its interface and occasional difficulty spikes can feel dated.
