Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The player selects a martial-arts discipline and works through practice sessions before entering tournament matches. Combat takes place from a side view, with fighters moving around an arena and using attacks, blocks, and evasive movement.
Each discipline has its own reach, timing, and attack patterns. Success depends on reading the opponent, maintaining distance, conserving stamina, and choosing safe openings. Progression is based on winning bouts and advancing through the tournament rather than on character levels or equipment upgrades.
Plan your run
Spend time in practice before attempting the tournament, especially to learn the range and recovery time of each weapon or style.
Use defensive movement and wait for committed attacks. Repeatedly attacking can exhaust the fighter and leave an opening, while careful spacing is particularly important for the shorter-range styles.
Before you begin
Learn one discipline thoroughly before switching styles.
Keep distance with long weapons and close the gap carefully with karate.
Treat stamina and recovery time as important resources.
Budokan: The Martial Spirit is a martial-arts fighting game developed and published by Electronic Arts for DOS in 1989. Instead of focusing on a single fictional combat style, it presents a training-and-tournament structure built around four disciplines: karate, kendo, nunchaku, and bo staff. Players practice techniques, adjust their approach to each opponent, and compete in increasingly demanding bouts. The game uses a side-view presentation with a deliberate pace, emphasizing distance, timing, blocking, and stamina rather than rapid button presses. Contemporary reception was mixed: reviewers often appreciated its unusual subject matter, atmosphere, and breadth of techniques, while some found the controls demanding and the combat slower or less responsive than arcade fighters. It remains a distinctive early home-computer martial-arts simulation.
