How it plays

How does Caesar III play?

The game is viewed from an isometric perspective. Players lay roads, zones, reservoirs, walls, gates, farms, workshops, markets, temples, schools, entertainment venues, and administrative buildings, then manage workers, resources, services, taxes, trade, and employment.

Scenarios usually require population targets, prosperity, culture, peace, favor, or specific construction goals. Housing evolves when residents receive better access to water, food, goods, education, entertainment, and religion. Some missions also include invasions, military recruitment, diplomacy, and resource shortages. The campaign advances through a sequence of increasingly complex Roman settlements.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Caesar III?

Plan roads and service coverage before expanding housing. Keep industry, farms, warehouses, and markets connected but separated from desirable residential areas.

Upgrade housing gradually rather than zoning too much at once. Monitor employment, food variety, water access, entertainment, and religious coverage, and maintain a reserve of denarii for emergencies or military expenses.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use overlays frequently to check water, desirability, religion, education, entertainment, and crime coverage.

  2. 2

Avoid overbuilding expensive monuments before the city has stable food, employment, and tax income.

  3. 3

Place warehouses and granaries near production areas, and set storage priorities when a mission depends on a particular resource.
