Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The player explores a castle from an adventure-game perspective, moving between rooms and interacting with objects, hazards, and creatures through typed commands. The central objective is to search the castle and obtain its treasure while avoiding situations that can end the game.
Progress is based on exploration and problem solving rather than character statistics or conventional combat. Players must inspect locations, test useful actions, and keep track of routes so that important areas can be revisited efficiently.
Plan your run
Map every room as it is discovered and record unusual objects, exits, and dangerous locations. A written map is especially useful when the castle’s passages begin to repeat or when a route must be retraced.
Try simple, context-appropriate commands before abandoning an area, and avoid wasting irreplaceable objects. If an action produces a surprising result, note it down; adventure-game solutions often depend on reusing an earlier discovery in a different room.
Before you begin
Map the castle and mark hazards as soon as they are found.
Record important objects and the actions that affect them.
Retry unexplained situations with carefully varied commands rather than random actions.
Castle Adventure is an early DOS adventure game created by Kevin Bales and released in 1984. It places the player inside a dangerous castle and asks them to explore its rooms, overcome hazards, and seek its treasure. The game belongs to the text-adventure tradition, using typed commands and exploration rather than arcade-style action. Progress depends on observing the environment, choosing useful actions, and remembering the castle’s layout. Its compact design and home-computer presentation make it a representative early personal-computer adventure, although it is considerably less elaborate than later commercial adventure games. Today, it is chiefly of historical interest to players exploring the formative years of DOS interactive fiction.
