How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective across a large, interconnected castle. Soma explores rooms, defeats monsters, collects weapons and armor, and searches for abilities that open previously inaccessible areas.
Combat is based on a primary weapon and three soul categories: Bullet, Guardian, and Ability. Defeated enemies may yield souls, while bosses and story events expand Soma’s options. Save rooms, warp rooms, shops, equipment, and multiple endings structure progression.
Plan your run
Build a flexible soul set rather than relying on one attack. Test new souls against different enemy types, since some provide useful movement, defense, or elemental advantages.
Explore methodically and revisit earlier rooms after gaining new abilities. Keep several weapon and armor options available, use status-resistant equipment when needed, and save before major boss encounters.
For the best ending, complete the required castle objectives and confront the true source of the crisis rather than ending the story after the first apparent victory.

Its castle design and progression are strong, although some rare soul drops require patience.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is a 2003 action platformer with exploration and role-playing elements, developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo for the Game Boy Advance. Set in 2035, it follows Soma Cruz after he is drawn into Dracula’s castle and discovers an unusual power to absorb enemy souls. The game combines precise side-scrolling combat with interconnected rooms, hidden routes, equipment, and character progression. Its Tactical Soul system gives enemies collectible abilities that alter attacks, movement, and defense. Aria of Sorrow was widely praised for its responsive controls, inventive progression, strong atmosphere, and effective adaptation of the series’ exploration formula to a handheld system. It is commonly regarded as one of the GBA’s standout action games and one of the strongest entries in the Castlevania series.
