How it plays
The game uses a 2D side-scrolling perspective. Jonathan and Charlotte explore Dracula’s Castle, defeat monsters, collect equipment, gain experience, and search for abilities that open previously inaccessible routes.
Players can switch between the two protagonists and use their complementary strengths. Jonathan specializes in close combat and weapon techniques, while Charlotte uses spellbooks and magical attacks. Portraits inside the castle lead to separate areas with distinct themes and bosses.
Progression includes level growth, new weapons and spells, subweapons, quests, familiars, and optional modes. Defeating Brauner and the castle’s major threats advances the main story, while additional endings and challenge content reward further exploration.
Plan your run
Explore every portrait area thoroughly before returning to the main castle. Break suspicious walls, inspect vertical routes, and revisit rooms after gaining new movement or combat abilities.
Use Jonathan for strong physical damage and Charlotte for ranged attacks, elemental spells, and healing. Switch characters rather than spending items unnecessarily, and equip weapons or spells that exploit an enemy’s weakness.
Complete Wind’s quests and collect better equipment from portraits. Save healing items for bosses, learn their attack patterns, and keep the partner safe when a fight becomes crowded.

Editorial context
A strong Nintendo DS entry that combines classic Castlevania exploration with a useful two-character system.
The large amount of optional content makes the game rewarding for players who enjoy mapping and replaying areas.
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is a gothic action RPG and exploration-focused platformer developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo for Nintendo DS. Set during World War II, it follows vampire hunter Jonathan Morris and magician Charlotte Aulin as they investigate a haunted castle controlled by the vampire Brauner. The game combines precise side-scrolling combat, room-by-room exploration, equipment management, and character switching. Its defining feature is the ability to control Jonathan and Charlotte together, either directly or through partner commands. Portrait of Ruin was well received for expanding the series’ exploration formula with cooperative mechanics, varied environments, and substantial optional content. Critics also praised its presentation and replay value, while some considered its main castle structure less unified than earlier entries.
