Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
Catacomb uses a top-down perspective. The wizard moves through connected dungeon rooms, avoids or defeats monsters, collects useful items, and searches for exits and progression through increasingly dangerous areas.
Combat centers on casting ranged magic while managing movement and positioning. The game is structured around dungeon exploration rather than separate competitive modes, with survival, navigation, and resource use providing the main progression.
Plan your run
Keep moving when enemies approach instead of fighting from a fixed position. Use the room layout to create distance, especially when several monsters attack at once.
Explore methodically and check side passages for treasure or useful supplies before committing to the next area. Conserve powerful magic for crowded rooms and tougher encounters.
Before you begin
Learn the movement and spell controls before entering crowded rooms.
Use corners and open space to avoid being surrounded.
Search the dungeon carefully rather than rushing toward the first apparent exit.
Catacomb is a top-down fantasy action game developed by id Software and published by Softdisk for DOS. The player controls a wizard exploring dangerous underground chambers, fighting monsters with magical projectiles and collecting treasure while searching for the route through each dungeon. Its real-time combat, maze-like rooms, and keyboard-driven movement give it a straightforward but demanding play style. Catacomb was an early commercial release from the team that later created Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, and Doom. Although its presentation is primitive by later standards, the game is historically notable as an important predecessor to Catacomb 3-D and an early example of id Software’s dungeon-action design. Its shareware-era distribution helped establish the team before its major breakthrough.
