How it plays
The game uses a top-down view of single-screen or room-like cavern areas. The main objective is to explore, collect valuable objects, survive enemies and hazards, and find the exits or other required route through the cavern system.
The adventurer moves through passages, uses a whip against threats, and relies on limited supplies and special items. Progress depends on recognizing safe routes, avoiding unnecessary fights, and discovering how the rooms connect. The maze structure rewards memorization and cautious backtracking.
Plan your run
Conserve the whip and other limited resources whenever an enemy can be bypassed safely. Explore the edges of each room first, because passages and useful objects can be easy to miss.
Avoid rushing into unexplored spaces. Memorize dangerous layouts, keep an escape route open, and use special items only when they solve an immediate threat or unlock meaningful progress.
Before you begin
Treat every cavern as a resource-management puzzle, not only an action stage.
Map room connections mentally or on paper to reduce unnecessary backtracking.
Do not spend scarce weapons on enemies that can be avoided.
Caverns of Kroz is a top-down action-adventure maze game developed and published by Apogee Software for DOS. The player controls an adventurer exploring dangerous underground caverns in search of treasure and a route through increasingly difficult chambers. Movement, rapid decisions, and careful use of limited equipment are central to play, while monsters and environmental hazards make careless exploration costly. The game is built around discrete maze-like screens rather than a scrolling world. As an early Apogee release, it helped establish the Kroz formula and contributed to the company’s reputation for distributing compact, challenging shareware adventures, although its simple presentation and unforgiving difficulty are strongly characteristic of its era.
