How it plays
The game uses a side-view platform perspective. Keen travels across an overhead map, selecting stages and occasionally finding optional routes, while each level contains platforms, hazards, enemies, ammunition, and valuable items.
The objective is to reach the exit of each stage, survive contact with Vorticons and other creatures, and collect points and lives. Keen can run, jump, shoot, and use his pogo stick to cross difficult gaps. Completing levels advances the episode, while secret areas and bonus objects reward careful exploration.
Plan your run
Study enemy movement before committing to a jump, and use platforms to control the pace of each encounter.
Meet the cast

Before you begin
Explore every accessible room; many rewards are off the main route.
Do not jump blindly when a Vorticon is below or above the platform.
The pogo stick is useful for long gaps but can make precise landings harder.
Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons is a science-fiction platform game developed by id Software and published by Apogee Software for DOS. It follows eight-year-old Billy Blaze, who becomes Commander Keen after aliens steal vital components from Earth’s cities. The game combines precise side-scrolling jumps with enemy shooting, exploration, secret areas, and light puzzle solving. Its three episodes helped establish the shareware model that made Apogee releases widely accessible. The smooth scrolling, colorful graphics, and responsive controls were highly regarded for an IBM PC game of its period. Invasion of the Vorticons also introduced the character and design ideas that became the foundation of the Commander Keen series.
