How it plays

How does Crisis in the Kremlin play?

The game is presented through menu-driven screens, statistics, reports, and event notifications. The player guides the Soviet government through successive turns, choosing policies in areas such as economic reform, defense, diplomacy, nationalities, and party administration.

The objective is not limited to a single victory condition. The player may try to maintain the Union, reform socialism, increase personal political power, or pursue other ideological outcomes. Decisions alter public approval, factional support, resources, and the likelihood of unrest or political crisis.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Crisis in the Kremlin?

Begin with moderate policies and monitor the effects before making several major changes at once. Economic reform, political liberalization, military spending, and relations among Soviet republics affect one another, so solving one problem can create another.

Keep an eye on faction support, shortages, unrest, and foreign relations. Save before major decisions when possible, and use reports to identify trends rather than reacting only to the latest event.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Read every report before changing policy; many consequences are delayed.

  2. 2

Avoid extreme reforms until the economy and political situation are stable.

  3. 3

Treat republic relations and faction support as long-term resources.
