How it plays

How does Darklands play?

The game uses a first-person travel and exploration view for towns, roads, wilderness, and many encounters. The party moves across a map of medieval Germany, visiting settlements, recruiting specialists, buying equipment, gathering information, and accepting contracts.

Combat takes place in tactical real time with a controllable party. Players position characters, choose weapons or magic, manage stamina and wounds, and respond to enemies ranging from criminals to supernatural creatures. Progress comes from money, improved equipment, skills, reputation, experience, and the changing state of the campaign world.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Darklands?

Build a balanced party rather than relying on one exceptional fighter. Include characters who can handle combat, healing, alchemy, negotiation, and practical travel skills, because different contracts reward different specialties.

Keep several weapon types and useful supplies available, and avoid accepting jobs that exceed the party’s current reputation or resources. Information from towns and inns can reveal safer routes and better opportunities. Save before major journeys, since travel events and combat can quickly cause permanent injuries or financial losses.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Train complementary skills instead of giving every character the same specialty.

  2. 2

Carry healing supplies and spare equipment before leaving a major town.

  3. 3

Use local information to compare contracts and reduce unnecessary travel.

  4. 4

Treat reputation and finances as important progression resources.
