Rikus
A powerful mul gladiator and former slave who joins the party and is closely connected to the rebellion against Draj.
How it plays
The game uses an overhead exploration view for cities, wilderness areas, and dungeons. The party investigates locations, talks with non-player characters, searches containers, solves quests, and chooses how to respond to factions and local problems.
Combat switches to a tactical, turn-based view. Characters move across a grid, attack with weapons or psionic abilities, cast spells, use items, and exploit terrain. Experience improves characters and can provide access to stronger abilities, while equipment, ammunition, food, and party condition must be managed during the campaign.
Plan your run
Use terrain and positioning rather than rushing into melee. Focus attacks on isolated enemies, protect fragile spellcasters, and conserve powerful abilities for encounters that cannot be avoided.
Explore thoroughly and speak with characters more than once. Keep useful equipment and supplies, make backup saves before major decisions, and consider noncombat solutions when faction relationships or quest outcomes are at stake.

Before you begin

Dark Sun: Shattered Lands is a 1993 DOS computer role-playing game developed and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It is set on Athas, the drought-stricken world of TSR’s Dark Sun campaign setting, where escaped slaves become involved in a rebellion against the city-state of Draj. The game combines party-based exploration, dialogue, resource management, and tactical, turn-based combat. Players create a protagonist, recruit distinctive companions, and make decisions that can alter quests and the conclusion. Its grim setting, unusual survival concerns, and detailed tactical encounters earned it a positive reputation among computer RPG players, although its interface and combat pacing can feel demanding by modern standards.
