Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game is presented as a submarine command simulation with navigational and tactical displays. The player steers the boat, manages speed and depth, searches for targets, identifies ships, and conducts torpedo attacks.
Missions are built around patrol operations. Success depends on approaching carefully, conserving fuel and torpedoes, coordinating the crew, and diving or maneuvering to evade escorts after an attack. Progression is tied to completing patrol objectives rather than a conventional character-level system.
Plan your run
Use patience instead of attacking every contact. Identify targets before firing, preserve torpedoes for valuable or vulnerable ships, and keep an escape route in mind.
After an attack, change depth and course promptly to reduce the effectiveness of pursuing escorts. Conserve fuel during patrols and avoid exposing the submarine unnecessarily when the tactical situation is unclear.
Before you begin
Treat every contact as uncertain until it has been identified.
Plan an evasion route before launching torpedoes.
Avoid wasting fuel and ammunition during low-value encounters.
Das Boot is a DOS submarine simulation developed by Artronic and published by Three-Sixty Pacific in 1990. Based on the German film of the same name, it places the player in command of a World War II German U-boat. The game combines navigation, crew management, tactical combat, and resource decisions rather than presenting a conventional action game. Missions require the player to locate enemy shipping, select suitable attack positions, launch torpedoes, and survive depth-charge counterattacks. Its demanding interface and emphasis on procedure reflect the simulation design of the period. Reception has generally recognized its atmosphere and ambition, while also noting that the controls and presentation can be difficult for newcomers.
