Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game uses a top-down, map-based perspective. Players command opposing Civil War forces on a turn-by-turn basis, moving units, issuing combat orders, and responding to enemy operations.
Scenarios provide specific objectives, forces, and historical conditions. Progression is scenario-based rather than character-based; success depends on positioning, timing, supply considerations, and effective use of commanders and formations. The emphasis is on planning several turns ahead instead of rapid input.
Plan your run
Protect supply lines and avoid advancing isolated units beyond mutual support. Use terrain, roads, and river crossings to shape the battle before committing to a major attack.
Check the scenario objectives carefully: preserving key formations or holding ground can matter as much as destroying enemy units. Keep reserves available to exploit breakthroughs or contain unexpected movements.
Before you begin
Study the map and objectives before making the first move.
Concentrate forces for attacks instead of engaging everywhere at once.
Use historical context and terrain to anticipate likely avenues of advance.
Decisive Battles of the American Civil War, Vol. 2 is a turn-based historical wargame developed and published by Strategic Studies Group for DOS. It focuses on Civil War campaigns in the western theater, presenting battlefield operations through a map-based command system rather than an action-oriented interface. Players direct military units, manage movement and combat, and attempt to achieve scenario objectives under historical constraints. The game is designed for deliberate analysis and replay, with scenarios reflecting different situations and command problems. Its detailed rules and period setting earned it recognition among computer wargame players, although the interface and learning curve are demanding by modern standards.
