How it plays
Descent presents levels from a first-person cockpit view. The main objective is to explore each mine, destroy enemy robots, collect access keys, and locate the reactor before escaping through the exit.
The campaign contains multiple numbered mines with secret areas, switches, power-ups, hostages, and a reactor encounter. The player manages energy, shields, ammunition, and a growing arsenal of primary and secondary weapons. DOS versions also support multiplayer modes, depending on the game build and network or modem setup.
Plan your run
Map each mine before committing to the reactor fight. Mark colored doors, inaccessible corridors, and unexplored branches so that the escape route is easy to find after the reactor begins its countdown.
Conserve powerful missiles for clustered enemies and reactor encounters. Use strafing and the full vertical space of rooms rather than fighting from a fixed corridor, and collect hostages when safe so exploration is rewarded without wasting shields.

Before you begin
Learn to use strafing and vertical movement early; staying on one plane makes enemy fire much harder to avoid.
Watch energy and shield levels separately, and search side rooms for power-ups before entering major battles.
Descent is a science-fiction first-person shooter developed by Parallax Software and published by Interplay Productions for DOS. The player takes the role of a mercenary known as the Material Defender, sent into mines and industrial facilities overrun by hostile mining robots. Unlike corridor-based shooters of its era, Descent allows unrestricted movement in six directions, including pitch, yaw, roll, and strafing. Its campaign combines labyrinthine level design, key hunting, combat, and reactor destruction. The game was widely praised for its fast 3D movement, atmosphere, and technical ambition, although its disorienting controls and maze-like stages could be demanding for newcomers.
