Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The playfield is viewed in perspective from above, with pieces falling into a three-dimensional well. The objective is to arrange blocks so that a complete horizontal layer is formed and removed, creating room for new pieces.
Players move and rotate each piece before it locks. Different well shapes and difficulty settings change the available space and the challenge. Progress depends on maintaining stable stacks, reading depth correctly, and planning several placements ahead rather than simply clearing the highest visible surface.
Plan your run
Plan the lowest and least accessible spaces first, because gaps hidden behind a front layer are difficult to repair. Rotate pieces early while they are still high in the well, then use the available viewpoints to verify their depth.
Prefer flat, stable surfaces over narrow towers. Clear complete layers before the well becomes uneven, and avoid filling a corner unless the current piece or a likely future piece can reach it.
Before you begin
Use every viewpoint to check whether a piece is aligned in depth.
Keep the stack low and avoid isolated holes.
Practice with a simple well before attempting the more restrictive shapes.
Blockout is a three-dimensional falling-block puzzle game developed by Kadon and published for DOS by California Dreams. Its core premise resembles a traditional falling-block game, but pieces descend into a deep rectangular or polygonal well rather than a flat grid. Players must rotate shapes across several axes, position them precisely, and complete filled layers before the stack reaches the top. The DOS version offers a demanding single-player experience built around spatial planning and increasingly difficult configurations. Its distinctive depth and multiple viewpoints made it notable among late-1980s puzzle games, although the added complexity could feel less immediately accessible than flat-grid alternatives. Blockout remains respected for its original mechanics and precise, methodical play style.
