How it plays
The game uses a third-person viewpoint with a verb-and-noun interface. Click a verb such as OPEN, PUSH, or GIVE, then select a person, object, or location. Players explore the mansion, collect and combine items, solve environmental puzzles, and converse with its inhabitants.
Dave is always selected, while two additional teenagers are chosen at the start. Their skills affect which solutions are possible. The mansion has several connected areas, and progress comes from uncovering clues, obtaining keys and tools, and managing characters carefully; some actions can permanently endanger or kill a character.

Maniac Mansion is a comedy graphic adventure developed and published by Lucasfilm Games. The story follows teenager Dave Miller and a group of friends who enter the eccentric Edison family mansion to rescue Dave’s girlfriend, Sandy, from the mad scientist Dr. Fred. Built around point-and-click exploration, the game combines inventory puzzles, branching character choices, and deliberately absurd humor. Players select a team from several teenagers, each with different abilities, then investigate rooms, talk to residents, and manipulate objects while avoiding danger. Its multiple solutions and character combinations give the adventure unusual replay value. The game was widely praised for its interface, animation, writing, and inventive puzzle design, and it became a landmark in computer adventure games.
