How it plays
The game uses a top-down, mouse-driven perspective. Each hospital begins with limited space and resources, and the player must build rooms such as GP's Offices, Pharmacies, and treatment facilities before hiring staff and admitting patients.
Patients arrive with different illnesses, and diagnosis leads them through the appropriate treatment path. The player can place equipment, set staff policies, adjust salaries, research cures, and expand into new rooms or plots. Scenarios introduce increasingly difficult hospitals, special conditions, and financial targets.
Plan your run
Start with a compact layout that keeps diagnosis and treatment rooms close to the reception area. Avoid building expensive rooms before patient flow justifies them.
Monitor staff fatigue, queues, and hospital finances regularly. Train capable doctors and nurses, research recurring diseases, and keep spare cash for emergencies such as epidemics or equipment failures.
Before you begin
Keep corridors short so staff and patients spend less time walking.
Place benches and radiators where patients wait, but do not overbuild amenities early.
Use the status and queue information to identify bottlenecks before expanding.
Theme Hospital is a satirical construction and management simulation developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts. The player establishes and operates a private hospital, balancing room construction, staffing, finances, research, and patient care. Its comic diseases and exaggerated staff personalities give the otherwise demanding simulation a distinctive tone. The DOS release was widely recognized for combining accessible humor with detailed management systems, although its interface and escalating complexity can be unforgiving. Success depends on planning efficient layouts while keeping patients healthy, staff satisfied, and the hospital financially viable.
