How it plays
The game uses a first-person perspective. Duke must fight invading aliens, collect weapons and ammunition, find access cards, activate switches, and reach the exit of each level. The episode contains three levels: Hollywood Holocaust, Red Light District, and Death Row.
Players can run, strafe, jump, swim, use environmental objects, and search for hidden rooms. Health, armor, weapons, ammunition, and inventory items support progression, while secret areas reward careful exploration. The episode is primarily a single-player campaign.
Plan your run
Explore every room before leaving an area. Look for cracked walls, unusual textures, switches, vents, and alternate routes, since secret areas often contain ammunition, armor, or powerful weapons.
Conserve explosive ammunition for groups of enemies and tougher targets. Keep moving during fights, use the environment for cover, and save inventory items for situations where their specific effects are useful.

Editorial context
A landmark DOS shooter praised for its interactive environments, strong weapon design, hidden areas, and irreverent presentation.
The three-level episode is compact but varied, with urban exploration that rewards observation.
Duke Nukem 3D: Episode One: "Shrapnel City" is a science-fiction first-person shooter developed by 3D Realms for DOS and published through Apogee Software, with GT Interactive handling the retail release. It is the first episode of Duke Nukem 3D and follows Duke Nukem through an alien occupation of Los Angeles. The episode combines weapon-based combat, exploration, environmental interaction, and crude humor across three urban levels. Its responsive controls, interactive scenery, secret areas, and memorable level design helped Duke Nukem 3D become one of the most well-received PC shooters of the mid-1990s.
