How it plays
The game uses an isometric battlefield viewed from above. Each campaign mission assigns objectives such as gathering spice, building a base, defeating enemy forces, or capturing territory.
Players place a construction yard and other facilities, harvest spice with harvesters, and spend credits on infantry, vehicles, aircraft, and defensive structures. Missions begin with a limited base and expand through technology and production choices. The three Houses share core units but gain access to different specialized forces and technologies.
Plan your run
Secure nearby spice fields before expanding production. Protect harvesters with combat units because losing them can cripple the economy.
Build a balanced force rather than relying on one unit type. Use terrain and chokepoints defensively, scout before committing expensive vehicles, and keep enough credits for repairs, replacements, and the next technology level.

Developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Games, Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty is a science-fiction real-time strategy game set on the desert planet Arrakis. Players choose House Atreides, House Harkonnen, or House Ordos and compete for control of spice, the resource that finances military expansion. The game combines base construction, unit production, harvesting, and tactical combat on an isometric battlefield. Its campaign structure, resource economy, and direct mouse-based command system became an important model for later real-time strategy games. Contemporary reception recognized its ambitious interface and strategic depth, although the DOS version can feel slow and demanding by modern standards.
