How it plays
The action is viewed from an overhead, isometric-style perspective. Players dig through claimed earth, place rooms and traps, and manage resources such as gold and creature availability. A Dungeon Heart serves as the fortress’s central objective; its destruction ends the mission.
Campaign stages provide varied objectives, including defeating heroes, destroying rival keepers, and protecting important rooms. Creatures require wages, food, training, and suitable rooms. The Keeper can slap creatures, possess them, cast spells, and use traps to control battles and dungeon operations.
Plan your run
Expand carefully rather than opening every tunnel at once. Secure gold seams, claim enough territory for rooms, and keep the Dungeon Heart away from exposed entrances.
Train creatures regularly and match room types to their needs. Use doors, traps, and guard posts to shape enemy movement, then possess a suitable creature when direct combat or exploration requires precise control.
Watch wages, food, and creature happiness. A large army is not automatically effective if it is unpaid, poorly trained, or housed in unsuitable rooms.
Meet the cast
The player’s unseen dungeon lord, responsible for building the fortress, managing creatures, and defeating heroes and rival keepers.
A recurring heroic opponent who leads forces into the dungeon and represents the traditional fantasy hero.
A powerful late-game creature summoned through a special ritual. It is extremely strong but difficult to control.
Before you begin
Protect the Dungeon Heart with layered defenses instead of a single trap.
Use possession to scout dangerous areas and operate creatures directly.
Research new rooms, spells, and traps before committing to major assaults.
Dungeon Keeper is a real-time strategy and dungeon-management game developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts. The player becomes an evil Keeper who digs an underground fortress, attracts creatures, and protects a magical Dungeon Heart from invading heroes and rival keepers. The game mixes construction, resource management, creature supervision, combat, and direct supernatural intervention. Its irreverent presentation and reversal of the traditional fantasy perspective were widely praised, while its interface and difficulty could be demanding. The DOS release is the original version and is historically regarded as one of Bullfrog’s most distinctive strategy games.
