How it plays
The game uses a top-down view of single-screen or connected dungeon areas. The main objective is to explore each area, gather valuable items, survive encounters with monsters and hazards, and find the way onward.
Movement is grid-oriented and driven from the keyboard. Progress depends on reading the layout, choosing safe routes, using available equipment at the right time, and preserving resources for more dangerous sections. The DOS release is a single-player adventure rather than a collection of competitive modes.
Plan your run
Explore methodically instead of moving randomly. Check side passages and remember routes through areas so that dangerous rooms can be approached with a plan.
Conserve useful items for situations where enemies or hazards block the safest path. When several routes are available, favor the one that leaves room to retreat and avoid trapping yourself against dungeon walls.
Before you begin
Map unfamiliar areas mentally and revisit safe spaces when you need to regroup.
Avoid spending limited resources simply to clear an enemy that can be bypassed.
Treat treasure collection and survival as equally important objectives.
Dungeons of Kroz is a top-down action-adventure maze game created by Scott Miller and published by Apogee Software for DOS. The player explores dangerous underground chambers, collects treasure, avoids or defeats monsters, and searches for a route through increasingly demanding areas. Its play style combines real-time movement with simple resource management and arcade-like danger. The game belongs to Apogee’s early shareware era and helped establish the Kroz games as compact, keyboard-driven adventures built around exploration rather than complex narrative. Reception has generally focused on its straightforward challenge, maze-solving tension, and historical importance within Apogee’s formative catalog.
