Uriel Septim VII
Emperor of Tamriel, whose imprisonment and impersonation begin the central conflict.
How it plays
Arena uses a first-person perspective for exploration, dialogue, dungeon navigation, and combat. The main quest sends the player through several regions of Tamriel while optional guild work, wilderness travel, treasure hunting, and randomly generated quests provide substantial freedom.
Players create a character by selecting a class, attributes, skills, and equipment. Combat takes place in real time, with melee attacks represented by mouse gestures or directional input and spells selected from the character's available magic. Experience levels improve attributes and grant stronger abilities, while equipment, resting, shops, and spellmaking support long-term progression.
Plan your run
Save frequently, especially before entering major dungeons or accepting uncertain quests. Dungeon layouts can be confusing, so mark important doors, exits, and objective locations on the automap or with written notes.
Maintain several combat options. Carry reliable weapons, keep healing magic or potions available, and rest when safe. Guild training and useful equipment can matter more than simply advancing the main quest, while careful travel planning reduces the risk of running out of supplies.
Meet the cast
Emperor of Tamriel, whose imprisonment and impersonation begin the central conflict.
The Imperial Battlemage who betrays Uriel Septim VII and hides the Staff of Chaos.
A court mage who appears to the player as a spirit and guides the effort against Jagar Tharn.
Before you begin
Keep multiple save files because quest timing and dungeon navigation can create difficult situations.
Use guild services, shops, and spellmaking to compensate for weaknesses in the starting class.
Editorial context
A historically important DOS RPG whose enormous world and freedom are balanced by a dated interface and uneven presentation.
The Elder Scrolls: Arena is a first-person role-playing game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks for DOS. The player takes the role of an imprisoned agent who must cross Tamriel, recover the Staff of Chaos, and rescue Emperor Uriel Septim VII from the treacherous battlemage Jagar Tharn. Its large procedural wilderness, towns, dungeons, character classes, magic, and faction quests made it unusually ambitious for 1994. The interface and combat can feel demanding today, but Arena established the exploration-focused design and broad player freedom that became central to The Elder Scrolls series. Contemporary reception recognized its scale and ambition, despite technical roughness.
