How it plays

How does Elite play?

The game is viewed from the cockpit in first-person perspective. Players fly between space stations, buy and sell commodities, avoid or fight hostile ships, and attempt to increase their wealth and combat rank.

The galaxy contains many systems connected by hyperspace routes. Each system has an economy, station, and local dangers. Money can be invested in cargo, weapons, equipment, and ship improvements. Progress is largely self-directed; the principal long-term goal is to rise through combat ranks toward Elite status.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Elite?

Begin with legal, low-risk trade goods and keep enough credits for repairs and fuel. Compare prices between nearby systems, especially when a route offers a useful return cargo.

Upgrade the ship gradually, prioritizing defensive equipment and fuel capacity before expensive weapons. Avoid unnecessary fights until the ship is well equipped, and use the space station as a safe place to refuel and repair.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Keep cargo value and route distance balanced so a single loss does not end the game.

  2. 2

Watch the fuel gauge closely before committing to a long hyperspace route.

  3. 3

Dock regularly to sell cargo, repair damage, and save progress when supported by the version.
