Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game uses a first-person cockpit perspective. The main objective is to complete combat sorties while preserving the aircraft and meeting mission requirements.
Missions involve takeoff, navigation, interception, air-to-air combat, and attacks against selected targets. The player monitors instruments and radar, manages flight controls, selects weapons, and lands on a carrier or airfield when required. Progression is based on sortie performance and mission completion rather than a character-level system.
Plan your run
Learn the cockpit instruments before entering combat, and keep enough altitude and speed to recover from evasive maneuvers. Use radar information to establish target position before committing to an attack.
Do not waste long-range missiles on uncertain contacts. Confirm the target, launch from a favorable distance, then use speed and positioning to avoid entering an unfavorable close-range engagement. Treat carrier landings as a separate skill and practice the approach whenever the game allows it.
Before you begin
Monitor fuel and aircraft status throughout every sortie.
Use radar and identification information before firing.
Keep an escape route during missile engagements.
Approach carrier landings at a controlled speed and altitude.
F-14 Tomcat is a combat flight simulation developed by Dynamix and published by MicroProse for DOS in 1989. It places the player in the cockpit of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, with missions centered on carrier operations, interception, air combat, and attacks against ground or naval targets. The game emphasizes cockpit instrumentation, radar management, weapons selection, and aircraft handling rather than arcade-style presentation. Its play style is methodical: pilots must identify threats, manage speed and altitude, and use the Tomcat’s long-range missiles effectively. Contemporary interest came from its recognizable aircraft and serious simulation approach, although the interface and demanding procedures make it less immediately accessible than action-oriented flight games. It is remembered as a period combat simulator built around the F-14 fantasy.
