How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective. The objective is to guide a chosen hero through connected stages, defeat enemies, collect keys, and reach the exit while preserving health and managing magic.
Players move, attack, use class-specific magic, gather food and treasure, and activate switches or portals. Levels contain branching routes, locked areas, hazards, and hidden rewards. Progression comes from completing stages, finding power-ups, and improving the hero's effective combat strength.
Plan your run
Keep moving during fights so groups of enemies cannot surround the hero. Use narrow passages and corners to control the approach of stronger monsters.
Collect food before health becomes critical, and save magic for dense enemy groups or dangerous encounters. Search side paths for keys, treasure, and power-ups, but avoid taking unnecessary damage for minor rewards.

Gauntlet: Dark Legacy is a fantasy action game and handheld adaptation of Midway's Gauntlet arcade formula, developed for Game Boy Advance by Pocket Studios and published by Midway Games. Players choose a hero and fight through hostile stages filled with monsters, traps, locked doors, food, treasure, and magical items. The game emphasizes fast, direct combat and repeated dungeon exploration rather than complex role-playing systems. Its four playable classes have different strengths, attack styles, and magic abilities, giving each run a distinct feel. The GBA version compresses the arcade-style experience into a portable single-player adventure. Reception was mixed: reviewers generally recognized the enjoyable combat and recognizable Gauntlet structure, while noting technical limitations and the reduced scale of the handheld adaptation.
