Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game uses a top-down, hex-based battlefield. Players move formations, issue combat orders, manage leaders, and contest important terrain while attempting to achieve scenario objectives.
Play proceeds in alternating turns, with movement and combat constrained by terrain, unit status, command considerations, and available actions. Success depends on concentrating force, preserving cohesion, and using defensive ground effectively.
Scenarios cover portions of the battle and can support opposing human players or a computer opponent, depending on the selected setup.
Plan your run
Use terrain and elevation to anchor defensive positions, especially around key approaches and objectives. Avoid dispersing formations so widely that nearby units cannot support one another.
Preserve strong units for decisive attacks, watch morale and fatigue, and do not trade units casually. Historical assaults can be costly when attempted without artillery, leadership, or positional preparation.
Review the map before moving and plan several turns ahead; the value of a position often matters more than the number of hexes gained immediately.
Before you begin
Concentrate attacks against isolated formations rather than spreading fire across the whole line.
Use defensive terrain to reduce the effect of enemy assaults.
Keep reserves available for threatened objectives and unexpected breakthroughs.
Gettysburg: The Turning Point is a turn-based American Civil War wargame developed and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It recreates the Battle of Gettysburg through a map-based tactical system in which players command Union and Confederate formations rather than individual soldiers. The game emphasizes historical positioning, terrain, morale, movement, and combat decisions over animation or arcade action. Its DOS release reflects the austere presentation typical of mid-1980s computer wargames, with text-heavy information and functional map graphics. The title was recognized by strategy players for offering a detailed and demanding simulation of one of the war’s pivotal battles.
