How it plays

How does Gradius Advance play?

The game is viewed from a side-on perspective and scrolls continuously from left to right. The objective is to survive each stage, destroy enemy waves and environmental targets, then defeat a stage boss.

Players collect orange power capsules and move a selection cursor across the power meter to activate upgrades. The available arsenal includes the main shot, missiles, double or laser weapons, Options, and defensive equipment. A limited number of continues and the selected difficulty affect progression through the campaign.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Gradius Advance?

  • Learn each stage's enemy patterns before committing to a power-up route.
  • Build a stable setup with at least one Option, then prioritize the weapon that best fits the current stage.
  • Destroy power-capsule carriers early, but avoid dangerous detours for capsules.
  • When fully powered, avoid unnecessary risks: losing the ship can also remove the upgrades that make later sections manageable.
  • Practice bosses by observing their firing cycles and staying near safe movement lanes.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use short taps rather than constant movement around narrow terrain.

  2. 2

Options can cover multiple firing angles, but keeping them alive is more important than chasing every enemy.

  3. 3

If the game becomes too difficult, replay early stages to improve capsule timing and memorize hazards.
