Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
Battles take place from a top-down perspective on a two-dimensional space map. The objective is to defeat the opposing force while using available space, ship capabilities, and weapons efficiently.
Players maneuver individual vessels, select targets, attack, and manage a fleet whose composition affects available tactics. Progression is scenario- and battle-based rather than a conventional character-level system; success comes from improving positioning, conserving resources, and learning how different ships work together.
Plan your run
Keep ships separated enough to avoid losing the entire fleet to one attack, but close enough to support one another. Use the map’s open space to control engagement distance and approach vulnerable targets from advantageous angles.
Learn the strengths and limitations of each ship before committing to a large battle. Preserve damaged vessels when possible, and avoid spending powerful weapons against targets that can be handled by ordinary attacks.
Before you begin
Study enemy movement before committing the fleet.
Use coordinated attacks instead of sending ships forward one at a time.
Protect damaged or strategically important vessels.
Gravity Well is a DOS space-combat strategy game developed by Starlight Software and released in 1994. It places the player in command of a small fleet during tactical battles in a two-dimensional space arena, where positioning, weapon selection, and ship management matter more than reflexes alone. The game is designed around repeatable scenarios and competitive play, with ships performing different battlefield roles. Its shareware-era presentation is functional rather than cinematic, but the combination of fleet tactics and direct control gave it a distinctive identity among independent DOS releases. It is chiefly remembered as the first entry in the Gravity Well series.
