King Grunt
The ruler of the Gruntz kingdom and the central character involved in the rescue adventure.
How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective. Each level asks the player to guide a Grunt through a maze-like environment, collect useful objects, activate switches, defeat enemies, and reach the exit or rescue objective.
Weapons and tools give the Grunt different abilities. Players may break barriers, freeze hazards, cross special surfaces, or manipulate objects to open a route. Levels are completed in sequence, with later stages introducing more complex combinations of enemies, terrain, traps, and item effects.
Plan your run
Examine the entire area before using a weapon or consumable item. A tool that appears useful for combat may be required later to cross terrain or solve a puzzle.
Plan routes around one-way hazards and preserve useful items. When a puzzle seems impossible, check whether the needed object must be moved before an enemy is defeated or a switch is activated.
Meet the cast
The ruler of the Gruntz kingdom and the central character involved in the rescue adventure.
The kidnapped royal whose rescue provides the main story objective.
Before you begin
Explore safely before committing to a route or using a unique item.
Treat weapons as puzzle tools as well as combat equipment.
If progress stops, look for an unopened path, switch, or movable object rather than relying only on combat.
Gruntz is a puzzle-action game developed by Monolith Productions and published by Ubisoft in 1999. It follows the mischievous Gruntz, who must travel through a colorful world, solve environmental puzzles, and rescue the kidnapped Queen Gruntz. The game combines top-down exploration with real-time hazards, collectible weapons, switches, traps, and object manipulation. Its stages are built around experimentation: a Grunt’s current weapon or item often determines which obstacles can be crossed or destroyed. The playful presentation contrasts with puzzles that can require careful planning and precise timing. Gruntz received generally favorable attention for its inventive mechanics, humorous tone, and unusual combination of action and puzzle design, although some encounters were considered demanding.
