How it plays

How does Guilty Gear X: Advance Edition play?

The game is viewed from a side-on 2D perspective. Each match is a best-of-three-round fight in which the player must reduce the opponent’s life gauge before time expires.

Players use punches, kicks, slashes, heavy slashes, throws, jumps, blocking, character-specific special moves, and Overdrives. The tension gauge supports advanced techniques such as Roman Cancels. Arcade-style progression leads through successive opponents, while versus play provides direct matches. Unlockable material gives experienced players additional goals beyond the standard roster.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Guilty Gear X: Advance Edition?

Learn the normal attacks and special-move inputs for one main character before trying to master the entire cast. Practice confirming safe hits into a special move, then learn when Roman Cancels can preserve pressure or extend a combo.

Watch the tension gauge and avoid spending it automatically. Blocking, faultless defense, throws, and movement are important against aggressive opponents, while spacing is especially valuable for characters with strong weapons or projectiles.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use training or versus practice to learn each character’s range and recovery.

  2. 2

Do not mash special moves while defending; look for a punish after an unsafe attack.

  3. 3

Save tension for a Roman Cancel, Overdrive, or defensive option when it can change the round.
