Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
HardBall! uses a behind-the-pitcher baseball perspective for the main action. The player alternates between pitching, batting, and fielding, with the objective of scoring more runs than the opposing team over a regulation game. Pitching requires selecting a pitch and trying to place it effectively, while batting depends on timing and reading the delivery.
Games are structured as standard baseball innings rather than a level-based campaign. The player must manage outs, balls, strikes, baserunners, and defensive plays. Progression comes from completing games and improving execution; there is no documented role-playing progression system or unlock tree.
Plan your run
Vary pitch selection and placement instead of repeatedly using one delivery. Watch the count: strikes increase pressure on the batter, while balls can create dangerous baserunner situations.
On offense, wait for a pitch you can time well rather than swinging at every delivery. On defense, prioritize the most immediate out and track runners before attempting aggressive plays.
Before you begin
Use pitch variety to avoid making the batter’s timing predictable.
Protect a lead by favoring safe defensive decisions over speculative throws.
HardBall! is a baseball sports simulation developed and published by Accolade for DOS in 1985. It presents a complete baseball game through a compact, action-oriented interface, allowing the player to control both pitching and batting while also directing fielding decisions. Rather than relying solely on statistical management, the game emphasizes timing, pitch selection, and quick defensive responses. Its animated pitcher and batter presentation helped distinguish it from many earlier computer sports titles, and contemporary players generally regarded it as an important early home-computer baseball game. The rules and presentation are simpler than those of later simulations, but HardBall! established the series’ focus on direct play and became an influential part of Accolade’s sports catalog.
