How it plays

How does Heart of Darkness play?

The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Andy moves through dangerous sections of the alien world, searches for routes, avoids traps, solves environmental obstacles, and fights or escapes hostile Darklings. The objective is to advance through linear stages and rescue Whiskey.

Progression is divided into chapters and set pieces. Many hazards are learned through failure, with checkpoints allowing repeated attempts. Andy uses a firearm during combat sections, while other passages emphasize jumping, climbing, timing, and quick reactions. The DOS version is a single-player experience.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Heart of Darkness?

Study each screen before committing to a jump or attack. The game often signals danger through animation, sound, or enemy placement, but many traps still require a failed attempt to identify their timing.

Use checkpoints as learning points rather than rushing. In combat areas, keep moving, fire from a safe distance when possible, and prioritize escape routes over defeating every enemy. Memorizing short sequences of jumps and hazards is usually more reliable than improvising.
