How it plays
The game uses a first-person perspective. The objective is to explore interconnected hubs, defeat monsters, collect keys and artifacts, solve environmental puzzles, and reach the next area.
Players choose a Fighter, Cleric, or Mage. Each class has different weapons, attack ranges, and combat strengths. Progression involves finding colored keys, switches, puzzle objects, weapons, mana, armor, and artifacts. The DOS version supports single-player play and multiplayer modes.
Plan your run
Conserve mana and ammunition when ordinary enemies can be handled with the class's reliable close-range weapon. Learn each hub's layout, because switches and puzzle items may affect distant rooms.
Search side passages for armor, artifacts, and weapons before entering major battles. Save powerful artifacts for crowded encounters or bosses, and use the automap to track unexplored branches and inaccessible doors.

Hexen: Beyond Heretic is a dark-fantasy first-person shooter developed by Raven Software and published by id Software. It follows three warriors who fight through a corrupted world ruled by the serpent rider Korax. Unlike a conventional military shooter, Hexen combines ranged weapons, melee combat, magic, character classes, and hub-based exploration. The Fighter, Cleric, and Mage each have distinct equipment and abilities, giving the campaign different combat rhythms. Its interconnected levels, puzzle elements, and medieval horror atmosphere expanded on the foundation established by Heretic. The game was well received for its class system, ambitious level design, and grim setting, although its puzzles and maze-like progression could be demanding.
