Paul
One of the two soldiers sent to rescue the kidnapped girl.
How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. The objective is to move through enemy-held areas, defeat soldiers and vehicles, survive hazards, and reach the end of each stage before continuing the rescue mission.
Players switch between punches, kicks, weapons, grenades, and other available attacks while moving through linear stages. Enemies arrive in groups and may use firearms, explosives, or vehicles. Progress is stage-based, with lives and continues limiting repeated attempts.
Plan your run
Conserve firearms and grenades for dense enemy groups, armored targets, and dangerous vehicles rather than spending them on isolated soldiers.
Advance slowly near screen edges, use melee attacks when safe, and learn enemy entry points. In two-player versions, stay close enough to support one another without blocking movement.
Meet the cast
One of the two soldiers sent to rescue the kidnapped girl.
The second playable soldier and Paul's partner in the rescue mission.
Before you begin
Approach enemy groups carefully; rushing often exposes you to off-screen gunfire.
Save continues for later stages, where vehicles and clustered attacks become more frequent.
Ikari III: The Rescue is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed by SNK and adapted for DOS from the arcade game. Players control one of two soldiers sent to rescue a kidnapped girl from a heavily armed enemy force. The game combines hand-to-hand combat, firearms, grenades, and occasional vehicle sections in a direct arcade-style campaign. Its short stages, large enemy groups, and limited continues create a demanding play style typical of late-1980s arcade action games. The DOS version preserves the core mission and combat structure, although its presentation and controls depend on the computer configuration. Reception has generally focused on its frantic action and cooperative roots, alongside criticism of its difficulty and rough conversion.
