Joe
A caveman hero who fights through prehistoric stages with thrown weapons.
How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling view. Joe or Mac moves through several prehistoric stages, jumps across platforms, attacks enemies, and collects food and weapons. Weapons include axes, boomerangs, stone wheels, and other primitive projectiles.
Each stage ends with a stronger enemy or boss, and the player progresses by clearing the level rather than building a persistent character. Two-player cooperative play is associated with the original game, but the exact availability and input arrangement can vary by DOS release and configuration.
Plan your run
Keep moving and attack enemies before they can surround you. Use jumping attacks and projectiles to deal with enemies on different elevations, while saving stronger weapons for bosses.
Food restores health, so collect it when safe rather than rushing past it. Learn the timing of enemy approaches and avoid unnecessary close-range fights, especially near pits and other stage hazards.
Meet the cast
A caveman hero who fights through prehistoric stages with thrown weapons.
Joe's partner and the second playable caveman in the series.
Before you begin
Collect food whenever the route is safe, because health recovery is limited.
Use ranged weapons against dinosaurs and bosses instead of trading close-range hits.
Tatakae Genshijin: Joe & Mac is a prehistoric action platformer developed by Data East and released for DOS in 1992 by U.S. Gold. It adapts the arcade game commonly known as Caveman Ninja, following the cavemen Joe and Mac as they fight through hostile prehistoric territory to rescue kidnapped women from a rival tribe. The game combines side-scrolling platforming with beat 'em up combat. Players throw primitive weapons, avoid hazards, and battle dinosaurs and rival cavemen across colorful stages. The arcade original was recognized for its cooperative play and cartoon presentation; the DOS version brought that formula to home computers, although its technical presentation and controls depend on the DOS setup.
