Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
Documented for this version
The DOS version uses typed text commands rather than a documented gamepad layout.
Enter commands at the parser prompt; exact accepted wording can vary by situation.
How it plays
The game is viewed through illustrated location screens accompanied by text descriptions. The objective is to advance the quest by exploring, collecting or using relevant objects, speaking with characters, and solving environmental problems.
Progression is largely linear but still requires careful examination and experimentation. Players type commands such as movement, observation, conversation, and object manipulation into the parser; the party and story situation change as key obstacles are overcome.
Plan your run
Read every description carefully and examine unusual objects before attempting complex actions. Parser adventures often accept several phrasings, so reword an action when the game does not understand it.
Keep track of locations, companions, and unresolved obstacles. Save before major decisions or unfamiliar encounters, and revisit earlier areas when a newly obtained item suggests another solution.
Journey: The Quest Begins is a fantasy adventure from Infocom that combines a traditional text-parser interface with illustrated scenes and a party-oriented quest. The player guides Tag through a dangerous journey, examining locations, solving problems, and issuing commands in natural-language form. Companions and story events give the game a broader sense of travel than many earlier parser adventures, while the artwork provides visual context for important scenes. Its unusual presentation attracted attention in the late 1980s, although its interface and pacing were more specialized than those of mainstream action games. Today, it is chiefly remembered as an ambitious example of Infocom’s experiments with graphical interactive fiction.
