How it plays

How does Karateka play?

The game uses a side-view perspective. The fighter advances through the fortress, encounters guards and other opponents, and must defeat each challenger before continuing toward Mariko and Akuma.

Combat depends on choosing high and low attacks, guarding, and maintaining the right distance. A mistake can quickly end a duel, while reaching the princess and later facing Akuma provides the main progression. The DOS version is a single-player experience with no documented character-selection or multiplayer mode.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Karateka?

Watch an opponent's stance and attack timing instead of repeatedly pressing one attack. Keep a safe distance, use blocks when an attack is already committed, and answer openings with a suitable high or low strike.

Advance cautiously between encounters. Because defeat sends the fighter back to the beginning, consistent defense and memorizing enemy patterns are more valuable than rushing. Approach Mariko and major confrontations carefully, since the game can punish careless movement as well as missed attacks.
