How it plays
The game is played from a third-person perspective across static, illustrated screens. Graham travels through forests, deserts, mountains, villages, and castles, examining scenery and combining inventory items to advance the story.
Players select actions such as walking, looking, talking, taking, and using items. Progress is divided into story areas rather than conventional levels, with new locations and objects becoming available after key discoveries. Some choices can kill Graham or make the game unwinnable, so exploration, experimentation, and frequent saves are important.
Plan your run
Save often and keep several rotating save files, especially before entering a new screen or attempting an unfamiliar puzzle.

Before you begin
Keep multiple saves because the game contains dead ends and instant-death situations.
Read descriptions carefully; visual details often indicate usable objects.
Do not discard or overlook apparently minor inventory items.
Use the scoring system as a guide to missed discoveries, but do not expect it to explain every puzzle.
King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder! is a fantasy graphic adventure developed and published by Sierra On-Line for DOS. It follows King Graham after the kingdom of Daventry and his castle are mysteriously carried away by a powerful sorcerer. Graham must explore unfamiliar lands, solve inventory-based puzzles, and rescue his family before confronting the threat behind the abduction. The game uses Sierra's SCI interface, combining illustrated scenes, a mouse-driven command system, dialogue, and item interactions. Its large world, improved VGA presentation, and fully voiced CD edition later helped make it one of the best-known entries in the series. The DOS release is also remembered for challenging puzzles, dangerous dead ends, and situations where careful saving is essential.
