How it plays
The game uses a top-down, isometric perspective. Players establish settlements, assign workers, gather raw materials, process goods, construct buildings, and maintain food and equipment supplies. Roads and delivery routes are essential because resources must move between farms, workshops, storage buildings, and military facilities.
Campaign missions combine economic objectives with defense and conquest. Players recruit and equip several troop types, form groups, issue movement and attack orders, and fight battles in real time. Progression comes from completing missions and expanding access to buildings, workers, weapons, armor, and increasingly capable military forces.
Plan your run
Plan the settlement around short, direct roads between production buildings, storage, and the castle. Keep enough workers in farms and food-processing buildings before expanding the army.
Scout before committing troops, protect supply routes, and avoid exhausting experienced soldiers in unnecessary fights. Build military infrastructure early in missions that are likely to trigger attacks, and keep reserve food, weapons, and armor available for replacements.
Before you begin
Keep roads clear and use direct routes so carriers spend less time walking.
Produce food, weapons, and armor before recruiting a large army.
Save before major expansions or offensives because missions can punish poor logistics.
Knights and Merchants: The Shattered Kingdom is a medieval real-time strategy game developed by Joymania Development and published by TopWare Interactive. It combines detailed settlement management with direct battlefield control, asking the player to build a functioning kingdom before leading trained troops into combat. The campaign follows a kingdom threatened by invasion and political upheaval. Economy, logistics, military preparation, and tactical positioning are closely connected: poorly supplied settlements cannot field effective armies. The game earned a dedicated following for its deliberate pace, intricate production chains, and demanding missions, although its complexity and sometimes unforgiving interface made it less accessible than faster contemporary strategy games.
