Rusty
The player character, an adventurer who trains, explores, pursues romance, and prepares to fight the dragon.
How it plays
The game uses a first-person, text-and-menu presentation. Each in-game day gives Rusty a limited number of actions, including exploring the forest, fighting monsters, visiting the inn, training, and interacting with other characters.
Combat is based on selecting available actions and managing health, strength, gold, and equipment. Forest encounters provide experience and money, while training and purchases improve future performance. The long-term objective is to become strong enough to challenge the dragon, with other players able to affect the shared BBS world in multiplayer versions.
Plan your run
Spend early days building statistics and earning gold before attempting difficult forest encounters. Keep enough health and money for recovery, and treat daily actions as a limited resource.
Progress steadily rather than repeatedly challenging enemies above Rusty’s strength. Exploring, training, equipment purchases, and relationship actions all contribute to a successful run, while multiplayer competition can change the available opportunities.

The principal fantasy threat and the ultimate combat challenge.
Legend of the Red Dragon is a humorous fantasy role-playing game and BBS door developed by Seth Able Robinson and released for DOS in 1989. The player takes the role of Rusty, an adventurer trying to grow stronger, earn money, find romance, and ultimately confront the red dragon threatening the land. Its play style combines menu-driven exploration, short text descriptions, random encounters, resource management, and daily activity limits. Rather than presenting a continuous campaign, the game structures progress around repeated visits to locations and increasingly difficult fights. It became one of the best-known door games of the late BBS era, remembered for its compact design, comic tone, competitive multiplayer elements, and unusually persistent character progression.
