How it plays
Each stage presents a starting hatch, an exit, environmental hazards, and a required rescue percentage. Lemmings usually walk continuously and do not respond to direct movement commands, so the player must manipulate their behavior and construct a safe route.
The player selects skills from the interface and assigns them to individual lemmings. Builders create stairways, bashers and miners remove terrain, climbers scale vertical walls, floaters survive falls, and blockers turn groups around. Levels become harder through tighter time limits, more complex terrain, limited skill supplies, and multiple entrances or exits.
The main objective is to save enough lemmings while using the available skills efficiently. Some stages also require careful timing so that blockers, builders, and diggers do not interfere with one another.
Plan your run
Observe the whole stage before assigning a skill. Identify the exit, dangerous drops, and places where a blocker or builder can control the crowd.
Use climbers and floaters early when vertical routes or long falls are unavoidable. Reserve builders, bashers, and miners for places where they create a meaningful route rather than using them automatically.
Pause when the crowd becomes difficult to track, then work from the front of the group backward. If a level seems impossible, check whether a skill can be assigned to a different lemming or saved for a later obstacle.

Before you begin
Count the available skills before committing to a route.
Use blockers to separate the lead group from lemmings still entering the stage.
A slow, deliberate solution is usually safer than assigning skills rapidly.
Lemmings is a puzzle-action game developed by DMA Design and published by Psygnosis. The player must guide a stream of small lemmings through dangerous environments to a goal, rescuing as many as possible before the level’s exit or time limit is reached. Its play style combines real-time observation, planning, and precise task assignment. Individual lemmings can become climbers, floaters, blockers, builders, bashers, miners, or diggers, allowing the player to alter the route through each stage. The DOS version brought the game’s distinctive mouse-driven interface and large collection of puzzles to IBM-compatible computers. Lemmings was widely praised for its accessible concept, escalating challenge, memorable presentation, and unusual blend of strategy and action. It became one of the defining puzzle games of the early 1990s and established a long-running series.
