How it plays

How does Lode Runner play?

Each stage is shown from a single-screen side view. The objective is to collect all gold pieces; once the stage is cleared, a ladder to the next level appears. Guards patrol the platforms and can catch the player, so routes must be planned around their movement.

The player runs, climbs ladders, crosses suspended ropes, and digs temporary holes in adjacent floor tiles. Guards can fall into holes, but the openings close after a short time. The original game contains many fixed levels, with difficulty coming from increasingly precise timing and route planning.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Lode Runner?

Study the entire screen before moving. Identify the gold that requires the most difficult approach, then plan a route that leaves a safe escape path rather than trapping the runner near a guard.

Use holes to delay or redirect guards, but do not assume a hole will remain open indefinitely. Climb ladders and use ropes to control the timing of encounters; sometimes waiting is safer than crossing immediately.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Plan a complete route before collecting an isolated piece of gold.

  2. 2

Digging is primarily a positioning and delay tool, not a permanent attack.

  3. 3

Keep an escape route available when approaching a guard.
